Astronaut Fred Gregory has been named as the Associate Administrator for Safety and Mission Quality and astronaut Charles Bolden has been named to be Assistant Deputy Administrator. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NASA's Acting Associate Administrator for Space Flight Tom Utsman yesterday rescheduled the maiden flight of Endeavour for its STS-49 mission to May 7. The new launch window opens in daylight at 7:06 pm EDT and extends through 7:55 pm EDT. In making the change, Utsman said, "we reviewed the criteria for the first flight of Endeavour and determined it would be prudent to delay the date so that we could obtain the normal photographic documentation that a daylight launch affords." The launch window for the previously-scheduled launch date of May 4 began at 8:34 pm EDT and was after sunset. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin spoke before members of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics this morning at 9:00 am; NASA Select television will replay a tape of those comments at 12:00 pm EDT. Following his address to AIAA members, Mr. Goldin also spoke with members of the press; those remarks will be replayed on NASA Select following the AIAA comments. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The House Task Force on Defense, Foreign Policy and Space holds a hearing today on medical research. Many of the witnesses scheduled to appear are prominent surgeons. This hearing is being taped and will be shown tomorrow on NASA Select television at 12:15 pm. The House of Representatives is scheduled to consider H.R. 4364, the FY 1993 NASA Authorization Bill, tomorrow. C-SPAN is scheduled to cover the hearing. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This Thursday, April 30, scientists from NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration programs studying ozone depletion over the Northern Hemisphere this winter will present their preliminary findings. The press conference will originate at 1:00 pm EDT from the NASA Headquarters auditorium and will be shown live on NASA Select television. Participants will include NASA, NOAA and university scientists who have participated in either the on-going Airborne Arctic Stratospheric Expedition research program or the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite program. The airborne research program has completed six months of aircraft measurements of ozone-related chemistry operating from airports in Bangor, Maine, and Fairbanks, Alaska. The UARS satellite was launched from a shuttle in September 1991 and is making global studies of the chemistry, dynamics and energetics of ozone depletion in the upper atmosphere. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NASA has selected 48 college students, including 20 international students, to participate in its annual Space Life Sciences Training Program. The intensive six-week-long program is held each year at the Kennedy Space Center for college students who are interested in the life sciences, pre-medicine, bioengineering or related fields and is designed to attract such students to careers in those fields. The students were competitively selected from a field of 260 applicants. Those applying must be majoring in science or engineering and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0. More than 240 students have participated in this program since its first class in 1985. Here's the broadcast schedule for Public Affairs events on NASA Select TV.
