NAME: William G. Gregory (Major, USAF) NASA Astronaut BIRTHPLACE AND DATE: Born May 14, 1957, in Lockport, New York. His parents, William and Kathleen Gregory, reside in Gilbert, Arizona. They are retired school teachers from Western New York. His father is also a retired Naval Reservist, having served as both a fixed and rotary wing pilot. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Brown hair; brown eyes; height: 5 feet 10-1/2 inches; weight: 150 pounds. EDUCATION: Graduated from Lockport Senior High School, Lockport, New York in 1975; received a bachelor of science degree in Engineering Sciences from the USAF Academy in 1979, a master of science degree in Engineering Mechanics from Columbia University in 1980, and a master of science degree in Management from Troy State in 1984. MARITAL STATUS: Married to the former Mary Elizabeth Harney of Peoria, Illinois. Her parents, J. Philip and Kathleen Harney, still reside in Peoria where Mr. Harney heads an advertising firm. CHILDREN: William Philip, September 22, 1987; Christina Marie, June 6, 1989. RECREATIONAL INTERESTS: He enjoys distance running, tennis, water and snow skiing. ORGANIZATIONS: Member of the USAF Academy Association of Graduates. SPECIAL HONORS: Awarded the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the National Defense Service Medal. He is a Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, a Guggenheim Fellowhship recipient, and is a Professional Engineer registered in the State of Colorado. EXPERIENCE: Between 1981 and 1986 Gregory served as an operational fighter pilot flying the D and F models of the F-111. In this capacity, he served as an instructor pilot at RAF Lakenheath, U.K., and Cannon AFB, New Mexico. He attended the USAF Test Pilot School in 1987. Between 1988 and 1990 Gregory served as a test pilot at Edwards AFB flying the F-4, A-7D, and all five models of the F-15. Having flown in excess of 40 types of aircraft, Gregory has accumulated 2,000 hours of fighter time, of which nearly half was flown as a test pilot. Selected by NASA in January 1990, Gregory became an Astronaut in July 1991. He is qualified for assignment as a pilot on future Space Shuttle flight crews, and is currently assigned to Space Shuttle flight software verification in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL).
